Descriptions #1: Designing Professional Learning Opportunities that Focuses on Student Mathematical Thinking This module of Lenses on Learning provides instructional leaders with the opportunity to explore the topic of professional development in their schools. This course will consider what teachers need to learn – about mathematics, making sense of children’s understandings, and facilitating discourse to further mathematical thinking – in order to facilitate substantive mathematical learning for children in the classroom. Instructional leaders will explore what kinds of support, beyond extending opportunities to take part in professional development, are necessary for teachers who are deepening their practice of teaching mathematics. Meets 5 times from January - May. See schedule below for details.
#2: Lenses on Learning for the K-12 Science ClassroomThis four-session module provides instructional leaders with the opportunity to develop an “eye” for the standards based science classroom through watching and discussing videotapes as well as completing science investigations appropriate to the Elementary, Middle and High School levels. Instructional leaders will develop strategies for productively observing in science classrooms and for reshaping the discourse with teachers to focus on student scientific thinking and reasoning. In this first year of Science testing, get a head start on supporting your teachers as effective facilitators of student learning. Meets 4 times from February - May. See schedule below for detail |

Descriptions #1: Patterns, Functions and Change In this module, participants discover how the study of repeating patters and number sequences can lead to ideas of functions, learn how to read tables and graphs to interpret phenomena of change, and use algebraic notation to write function rules. With a particular emphasis on linear functions, participants also explore quadratic and exponential functions and examine how various features of a function are seen in graphs, tables, or rules. Meets 4 times from January – May. See schedule below for details
